Fee-only adviser

An adviser paid only by you — a flat fee or an hourly rate — never by commissions on products sold to you. 'Fee-only' is not the same as 'fee-based', which can include commissions. The distinction is printed on an adviser's regulatory filings, and checking a professional's record is free through the official regulator lookup tools.

For your first $100: Nobody needs an adviser for a first $100. When the fork is big enough to pay for advice, pay for the kind with no product to sell you.
